If you have been wondering:
- What actually is CBD oil?
- Should I add CBD to my herbal remedy kit?
- Can CBD help busy moms?
then look no further because these questions and much more are answered in this article.
So, what actually IS CBD oil?
CBD, or cannabinoid, is a compound that is extracted from hemp flower. It contains 0%-0.3% THC, so unlike oil derived from marijuana, it is not psychoactive (meaning, it will not get you high). CBD binds to receptors in the Endocannabinoid System in the human body in order to restore balance among all the body functions.
CBD has been used as an herbal remedy throughout all of history until the turn of the 20th Century when two men set out on a mission to sell as many prescription drugs as possible. In order to be successful, they labeled homeopathic and herbal remedies, including hemp, as “quackery” and “witchcraft” to convince the masses that their prescription drugs were the only suitable option. I’m guessing that you’re wondering who these two highly influential dudes are. Do the names Rockafeller and Carnegie ring a bell? Here’s a great video that dives deeper into this topic.
Is CBD and THC from the same plant?
Yes and no. Both CBD and THC come from the cannabis sativa species, which comes from the Cannabis genus. Within the cannabis sativa species, is the hemp plant and the marijuana plant. Hemp contains very low levels of THC (0%-0.3%), whereas marajuana contains higher levels of THC. CBD is derived from the hemp plant, and should be extracted from only the hemp flower. Many less-quality CBD brands will extract CBD from the stalk, stem, and surrounding flower parts in an attempt to yield a higher quantity for a lower cost. Doing this compromises the quality and gives it an earthy taste. You can tell if your CBD is lower quality if it has a darker color, as pure CBD oil should be clear.
How does CBD help in the human body?
The human body is made up of systems: skeletal, nervous, digestive, and so on. One system that has routinely been overlooked (thanks to the greedy guys mentioned above) is the Endocannabinoid System. This is a system of receptors that send messages throughout the body. Picture these receptors throughout the body like a Christmas tree with the lights turned on for the first time that year. Some lights may be burnt out, some may be flickering, and some may be ok. You need to go in to adjust the lights and fix the broken ones to achieve overall balance. The same idea applies to using CBD to balance the Endocannabinoid System receptors. Research shows that the Endocannabinoid System works, either in unity or in opposition depending on the overall quality of its functioning, with the other systems in the body: “The endocannabinoid system has been recently recognized as an important modulatory system in the function of brain, endocrine, and immune tissues. It appears to play a very important regulatory role in the secretion of hormones related to reproductive functions and response to stress.” (pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov)
Are all CBD products from different companies produced similarly?
The answer to this is a huge NO. The hemp industry is largely unregulated, and therefore there are a lot of products on the market that are very low quality and contain a wide range of toxins. We call it being “white-labled” when companies buy large quantities of low quality CBD and cover it up with a greenwashed label.
Additionally, 80% of CBD on the market today comes from China. Personally, this raises a huge red flag for me since I intend to be extremely aware of the quality of the products and ingredients that I’m using for myself and my children.
Here’s a quote directly from Green Compass addressing the quality of their oil extraction process: “Green Compass favors a small-batch extraction method that produces rich,
superior crude oil, which is then refined through a seven-step proprietary process. Non-organic extraction methods include butane, propane, and non-organic ethanol, among other harmful solvents. If using non-organic extraction methods, you run the risk of having toxins, heavy metals, and other unwanted dangerous compounds in the extract. These sources are also often derived from petroleum or other unwanted and unregulated sources.”

Should I buy organic CBD?
Absolutely! Here’s why. Hemp is called the “cleaner plant”, meaning that it removes toxins from the soil and air surrounding itself. This is one of Nature’s natural processes that plants intuitively do to keep overall health and balance. However, if that toxin impact is accelerated with the use of chemical pesticides, not only is that lowering the quality of the plant, but it’s also compromising the cleanliness of the final CBD product.
Green Compass is the only direct sales CBD company to be USDA Organic Certified from the soil to the bottle. Their farm and all of the other farms surrounding them within a 5 mile radius are also certified organic. They provide every single product with a Certificate of Analysis from independent third party testing that shows *exactly* what is detected inside. This level of transparency is unmatched in the hemp industry, which is why Green Compass is the only CBD company that I trust.

Is CBD good for moms?
You betcha!! I began taking Green Compass CBD (all the way back in 2019 when they were a new company!) when my first daughter was a few years old after a long journey through postpartum anxiety and depression. Very quickly, I noticed that I had this pause between stressor and reaction that I had never experienced before. Honestly, it was life changing for me. Instead of heading straight into an anxiety spiral, I was able to breathe, regulate my nervous system, calm my reaction, and strategize a productive way of handling whatever it was that was causing stress. Implementing CBD into my daily routine led to a huge step on my journey of healing myself, my inner child, and my generational lines. If you are on a similar journey, please feel free and welcome to reach out to me.
